Several Indian consumer fintech companies built large user bases with negligible paid acquisition. The lesson usually drawn from this is do content marketing, which misses what actually happened.
The shared pattern
The common move was building a free utility that solved a real problem for people who were not yet customers. Educational material for a market with almost no trustworthy independent explanation. Calculators and comparison tools that answered questions people were already searching for. Public data nobody else was publishing in an accessible form.
None of this was marketing in the conventional sense. It was product built for non-customers, which happened to create distribution.
Why it works in India specifically
Financial literacy content in Indian languages was thin and mostly published by institutions selling something. Anyone offering genuinely neutral explanation captured trust cheaply, because the bar was low and the need was large.
The same gap exists in other Indian categories right now. Compliance, healthcare, small business operations. Where the only available information is published by vendors, an independent explanation earns disproportionate attention.
What is copyable and what is not
Copyable: identify a question your future customers ask before they are ready to buy, answer it better than anyone, and give the answer away without gating it. Build the tool version of that answer if one exists.
Not copyable: the timing. Several of these companies moved when their category had almost no independent content and search competition was minimal. Entering a saturated category with the same playbook takes longer and costs more.
The honest constraint
This approach takes years and cannot be accelerated with budget. Companies that tried to compress it by outsourcing the content produced volume without trust and got neither rankings nor loyalty.
If your runway is under eighteen months this is not your strategy. If you are building something you expect to run for a decade, it is probably the highest-return thing available to you.
