For most clinics the website is not the first point of contact. A map result is. Someone searches dentist near me, sees three results, and calls one. Everything else in your marketing competes for a much smaller share of attention than that box.
What decides map rankings
Three things carry most of the weight. Proximity to the searcher, which you cannot change. Prominence, which comes largely from review volume and recency. And relevance, which comes from how completely and accurately your listing describes what you do.
Only two of those are actionable, which usefully narrows the work.
The checklist
- Claim and verify the Google Business Profile. Unclaimed listings for clinics are common and anyone can suggest edits to them.
- Set the primary category precisely. Dentist and Dental Clinic behave differently. Pick the one matching your highest-value service.
- List every service individually rather than in a paragraph. Each is a query someone types.
- Keep hours accurate including holidays. Wrong hours generate negative reviews faster than almost anything else.
- Add photographs of the actual premises, exterior included, so patients recognise the building.
- Make sure name, address and phone are byte-identical everywhere they appear online. Suite 4 in one place and #4 in another splits your signal.
- Build a page per location if you have more than one, each with its own address and embedded map.
Reviews, carefully
Review volume and recency drive prominence more than almost anything else. Asking patients for reviews is fine. What is not fine is soliciting reviews that describe treatment outcomes, which runs into the same professional conduct restrictions that limit testimonials.
Ask about the experience rather than the result. Ease of booking, waiting time, whether things were explained clearly. These are honest, useful to future patients, and stay clear of outcome claims.
Never incentivise reviews. It violates platform policy and is straightforward to detect.
What to fix first
Claim the profile, fix the categories and services, and set up a routine for asking every satisfied patient for a review about their experience. That sequence produces more new patients for most clinics than a website redesign, at a fraction of the cost.
